How to Introduce Yourself in English (Formal & Informal) – Masterclass for Indian Working Professionals
Have you ever been in a meeting where everyone is introducing themselves so confidently, and when it comes to you, you just say, ‘Hi, I’m Raj, and I work in IT,’ and go completely blank after that? If yes, you’re not alone. In this video, we’ll master the art of introducing yourself-formally and informally-so you never feel under-confident again.
Welcome to today’s training session. I’m Vinit Kapoor, your trainer, and this session is going to be extremely practical and actionable.
This is not just another grammar lesson. This is a communication skill-building session. Which means: you have to speak along with me. I repeat-don’t just listen. Say every example out loud with me.
By the end of this video, you’ll be confidently introducing yourself in formal situations like meetings, interviews, networking events-and also in informal scenarios like office parties, travel, and online communities. Also, I’ll be giving you a real-world activity at the end, so stay with me till the end. Let’s start with a simple question: Why is self-introduction so important?
Because first impressions matter. Whether you’re in a new company, meeting a client, attending a seminar, or even joining a new project, the way you introduce yourself sets the tone.
Most people either speak too little or ramble too much. We’ll fix that today.
Let me show you a common example:
‘Hi, I’m Priya. I work in HR. That’s it.’ Sounds dry and forgettable, right?
Now a better version: ‘Hi, I’m Priya. I work in Human Resources, and I focus on recruitment and employee engagement. I’ve been with XYZ Corp for 5 years, and I’m really passionate about helping people grow in their careers.’
We’ll learn how to build such introductions today.
Let’s make it super simple. Your self-introduction should have 5 elements:
- Your Name
- Your Current Role/Profession
- Your Company or Background
- Your Core Strengths or Passion
- One Personal Detail or Hobby (optional, in informal setups)
I call this the N-R-C-S-H Formula: Name – Role – Company – Strength – Hobby
Repeat this aloud with me:
My name is [Name]. I work as a [Role] at [Company]. I specialize in [Strength/Area]. And in my free time, I enjoy [Hobby].
Let’s take multiple examples in different contexts using this.
Context 1: Job Interview
Hi, I’m Karan Mehta. I currently work as a Digital Marketing Manager at BrightEdge Solutions. I handle performance marketing and lead generation campaigns. Over the last 6 years, I’ve worked on multiple brand launches and driven ROI-focused campaigns. I’m now looking for a role where I can lead a team and manage end-to-end digital strategy.
Context 2: Client Meeting
Good morning. My name is Neha Gupta. I’m the Senior Business Analyst at Clarity Consulting. I work with enterprise clients to improve process efficiency through data-driven solutions. Looking forward to discussing how we can add value to your current operations.
Context 3: Presentation at a Company Meeting
Hello everyone, I’m Manish, part of the IT Infrastructure team. I’ve been working with XYZ Ltd. for the last 4 years, primarily handling cloud migration and network security. Today I’ll walk you through our proposed changes for Q3.
Now YOU try. Pause the video, write your formal introduction, and speak it out loud. Repeat it twice.
INFORMAL INTRODUCTION EXAMPLES
Context 1: Office Party or Team Lunch
Hi, I’m Aditi. I’m part of the finance team-I manage budgeting and forecasts. I’ve been here just 3 months, but I’m already loving the culture. Outside work, I’m a huge cricket fan!
Context 2: Networking Event or Seminar
Hey, I’m Sameer. I’m a product designer with TechNova. I work mostly on user interface design. I enjoy connecting with fellow designers and sharing ideas-so looking forward to chatting with you.
Context 3: Online Community Introduction
Hi everyone! I’m Devika, based in Pune. I work as a supply chain executive with HindGlobal. I joined this community to learn and share tips around logistics and inventory. Excited to connect with you all.
Repeat after me: Pick one example and say it aloud. You can even record it as voice note.
DOs AND DON’Ts OF SELF-INTRODUCTION
DOs:
- Be confident and smile while speaking
- Keep it short and crisp (30-45 seconds)
- Use simple English words
- Practice often-in front of a mirror, or with friends
DON’Ts:
- Don’t speak too fast or too slow
- Don’t use jargon unless it’s relevant
- Don’t give your life story
- Don’t end abruptly; have a proper closure
Remember: Confidence is more important than complexity.
SPEAKING ACTIVITY
Let’s now do a small spoken activity.
I want you to pause the video, and answer these three questions aloud:
- What is your name and what do you do?
- Where do you work or what do you specialize in?
- What is one interesting thing about you?
Now, frame a 30-second introduction using the formula:
Hi, I’m [Name], I work as a [Role] at [Company]. I specialize in [Skill/Area], and I love [Hobby/Interest].
Repeat this 3 times. Speak slowly and clearly. You can even record it and listen to how you sound.
ASSIGNMENT
Here’s your assignment:
Record a 30-second video introducing yourself using the N-R-C-S-H structure.
Once done, upload it in our learner’s community. Watch others’ videos and learn how everyone is improving.
Remember: Communication is a skill. And a skill grows only through practice. Not by watching, but by doing.
That brings us to the end of this session. We learnt how to introduce ourselves formally and informally, using structure, examples, and tone.
Remember to:
- Practice aloud
- Repeat examples
- Share your intro video
See you in the next session, where we talk about how to talk about family & family members. Until then, keep practicing and keep speaking!
